The United States is facing significant outbreaks of avian influenza, also known as bird flu. According to the CDC, since 2022, over 145 million birds have been infected.
Once avian flu is detected in flocks, there are mass cullings to limit the spread. This is necessary because of how easily spread bird flu is among flocks. This, coupled with more hens falling subject to the virus, decreases the amount of eggs that are laid. Infected hens transmit the virus to their eggs, making them unsuitable for consumption. If a human is infected with avian flu, they will experience several upper respiratory symptoms, such as coughs and shortness of breath. It is also possible to develop pneumonia and more life-threatening conditions, though there has only been one confirmed death in the United States from the virus.
Egg prices increased in the U.S. by 8% in the month of November (2024). It is expected that throughout 2025, egg prices will increase by 20% as a result of this bird flu outbreak.
