What is it
Sauna bathing is a form of heat therapy that takes place in a room heated by burning wood. Typically, the temperature of a sauna is between 158 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat from a sauna is dry heat- the humidity is between 10-20% percent.
How to use it
It is recommended to use the sauna either before or after exercising. This is because its good for your muscles and your body, as it helps with recovery. In my experience, I’ve used the sauna after I work out in the late afternoon/early night. This has significantly helped with my sleep, since my entire body and mind are calm.
Physical Benefits
Saunas activate the body’s thermoregulatory systems and stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. Exposure to heat causes blood vessels to dilate, which can improve blood circulation. This makes saunas particularly helpful for people who have hypertension. Heat also can increase the rate of how much blood the heart pumps per minute, which makes it similar to a light work-out. This makes saunas beneficial for heart health. Since blood flow is increased by heat therapy, extra nutrients and oxygen are brought to the muscles, promoting flexibility and reducing stiffness. Additionally, the sauna improves the health of your skin. Being in a sauna, you sweat a lot which is detoxifying to clean the pores in your skin.
Mental Benefits
It has been shown that people who use a sauna four to seven times a week for an average of 15 minutes have a 66% lower risk of developing dementia and a 65% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. compared to people who use it only once a week
One of the most common and well-known benefits of using a sauna is the relaxation it provides.
When we spend time in a sauna, our body temperature increases, which results in better blood circulation and the release of endorphins. These endorphins are known as the “well-being” hormones and help reduce stress and anxiety levels, making us feel calmer and more relaxed.
Another benefit of using a sauna is the positive effect it has on our sleep quality.
Using a sauna can also help improve cognitive function. The increased blood flow to the brain stimulated by sauna use can help improve memory, concentration, and overall cognitive performance.
Studies have shown that using a sauna can be helpful in reducing symptoms of depression. The warmth and relaxation that a sauna provides can help lift your mood and improve overall mental health.
