Silent but Deadly: Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of burning fuels—like gas, wood, charcoal, or propane. It’s produced by things like cars, space heaters, gas stoves, and generators. When these run in enclosed spaces or aren’t ventilated properly, CO builds up fast.

Here’s the science: CO binds to your red blood cells way more easily than oxygen does. So instead of delivering oxygen to your organs, your blood delivers poison. This results in cells suffocating, which shortly means you will too. This can happen without you even knowing.

Common symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of consciousness (people often mistake it for the flu)

If everyone in a room suddenly feels sick or tired at the same time, and there’s a fuel-burning appliance nearby—get out and call 911.

Some tips for prevention include installing CO detectors near bedrooms and fuel-burning appliances. Never run a car or generator inside a garage.Keep vents and chimneys clear. Get appliances inspected regularly. Carbon monoxide doesn’t smell, doesn’t irritate, and doesn’t make noise. That’s what makes it scary.
